Light Leaks and Leap Years

OK, it's a special day so here's another post.

Two more old photos that I found lurking on a disc whilst I was tidying up. Taken using a Holga - the clever amongst you will already have worked out that they must be old pictures taken at some time in the summer - not going to get light leaks during a Stornoway winter am I?

Back to the 29th Feb. What is the purpose of the leap day? I know it's all to do with earth's 365 1/4 day orbit around the sun, but why bother with an extra day (29th Feb) every 4th year?

If you were born on the 29th Feb it can't be much fun only having one real birthday every 4 years, can it?

I've been thinking about what would happen if there wasn't a leap day. This is what I concluded.

Every 4 years xmas would move a day forward, so it would take 182.5 x 4 years for the northern hemisphere to get a mid-summer xmas. So the extra day is pointless and us pommies are never going to get a xmas sun tan (global warming excepted) unless we're happy to travel. Well not in my life time anyway (unless I'm unfortunate enough to have some kind of immortality gene and have many years of elderley incontinence to look forward to).

Enough of my mental meanderings, I leave you with this:

  1. Funny post Ian!
"facing many years of elderley incontinence" hahah.
Maybe you are the original Highlander... don't try to chop off your own head though.

  2. The Egyptians (I think, could have been some other ancient civilisation) didn't bother with leap years. They allowed the seasons to drift and after it'd gone so far out of sync threw in a special week of partying until the dates were back on track.

  3. Highlander? Better keep an eye out for the Kurgan.

That sounds a good idea to me, Tony
